PHOTOGRAPHER'S PROFILE

Name: Arny Raedts
Home country: Netherlands / Germany

Arny started to get interested in photography at age 14. In the early eighties he studied audio and visual design and began to specialize in concert photography. After graduation he started working in public relations and began taking freelance assignments as a rock-photographer/journalist. In a contradiction to the loudness of a rockconcert, the one thing he enjoys most is the quietness of extreme nature such as in deserts. Nothing beats a great desert sunrise after a good concert the night before. Since deserts are not that common in the Netherlands, he spends most of his holidays in the USA. Apart from publications in several magazines and photos for albumcovers, his work has been used in international city and travel guides. Visit Arny's website at www.arny.nl

PHOTO LOCATION: Bodie Ghost Town, California, U.S.A.

Bodie Ghost Town

ABOUT THE LOCATION

Bodie is one of the most visited ghost towns of the Southwest, and when you see it, you'll know why. It looks like those old Clint Eastwood movies where the lone hero rescues a small town from a pack of outlaws. If you are driving from Yosemite to Death Valley via the Tioga Pass, be sure to visit this photogenic site. And if you do, combine it with a sunrise or sunset at Mono Lake. Bodie won't disappoint you; the mining town itself is really well preserved and there are tours led by park rangers. Most houses are closed, but you can get some shots through the windows.
The route from Yosemite is only passable in summer, so be sure to check for road and weather conditions, since the Tioga Pass is mostly impassable when snow has fallen.
The best time for photography is late in the evening, just before sunset.
TIPS FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER

What to photograph: The buildings, old rusty car-wrecks and don't forget the interiors.
When to photograph: The evening light is the best to shoot. It give the whole town a romantic yellow haze.
Photography tips: Use a polarizer when shooting through the windows. This filter can help neutralize reflections in the window.
