PHOTO LOCATION: Aletsch Glacier, Wallis Canton, Switzerland

Aletsch Glacier

ABOUT THE LOCATION

The Aletsch glacier has the status of an UNESCO world nature heritage site and once you've had your first glimpse of this glacier you will understand perfectly why this is. The glacier has an enormous length of 23 kilometres and has its origin in the famous Jungfrau region in Bernese Oberland. The glacier’s best panorama however can be seen from the Eggishorn, located in Wallis on the southern side of the Alps. From here you can see the winding glacier with the Jungfrau, Moench and Eiger mountains completing a perfect and beautiful view. For a closer view of the glacier, take a walk down from the Eggishorn to lake Maerjelen. There is a cabin with a small restaurant and from there you can stroll down to the edge of the glacier where huge ice blocks lie broken off.
TIPS FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER

What to photograph: Panoramic images of the glacier, lake Maerjelen with access to the glacier and close-ups of the glacier itself.
When to photograph: A visit is possible at any time of year and each season offers different views. It is a winter dream when covered in deep snow and fascinating in summer with its two moraines and when you can get closer to the glacier.
Photography tips: Don't forget a polarizer and take a wide-angle as well as telephoto lenses. You will find a subject for basically any focal length of lens.

Where it is: The Aletsch glacier is situated in the heart of Switzerland and can be accessed from two sites: from the Jungfraujoch in the North and from the Rhône valley (i.e. Fiesch) in the South.
How to get there: It's 3 hours from Zurich through the Loetschberg tunnel or via Lucerne and over the Grimsel pass (Jun - early Oct). Alternatively take a train to Brig and then a local train to the village of Fiesch. A cable car takes you to the Eggishorn in 2 sections.
Accommodation: Fiesch offers all sorts of accommodation from guesthouses to hotels as well as a good selection of pubs and restaurants. If you want to go in winter it is better to book in advance as skiing is very popular in the area.
What to take/
Other info:
Solid walking boots are essential if you want to go down to the glacier as the trails can be rough. A tripod can be useful for close-ups (flowers) or for sunset scenes.
