PHOTO LOCATION: Dune du Pilat, Aquitaine, France

Was this a Sand Hopper?

ABOUT THE LOCATION

Sand dunes can found in many places along the coastlines of Europe, and are often a favourite subject for photographers, but the Dune du Pilat simply tops them all. At over 100 metres high and 500 metres wide, this mammoth dune stretches three kilometres along the south west coast of France and is the largest sand dune in Europe. This miniature desert provides a sea of opportunities for photos of wave-like forms, rippled patterns on the dune's surface and the curving lines of the sandy peaks. Almost devoid of vegetation, there are great possibilities for clean orange shapes set against the blue sky, or you can use the few spiky grasses to your advantage as foreground interest. Delicate bird trails can also be used as focal points, and even human footsteps can offer a leading line through a photograph. End your photographic day by catching the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean amidst the glowing pink mountains of sand.
TIPS FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER

What to photograph: The largest sand dune in Europe, with its undulating lines, patterns of light and shade on the rippled surface, bird and human trails, spiky grasses and a sunset over the sea.
When to photograph: Low light accentuates the sandy ripples, and the form of the dune and turns the sand a beautiful pink colour. After a bit of wind the footsteps will be blown away.
Photography tips: During heavy rainfall the sand can be broken off and moulded into unusual formations like eroded rocks. These strange shapes, with a dimpled surface texture, can produce great photos.

  FACTS & INFO

Glowing Dunes at Sunset

Where it is: The Dune du Pilat liet just under the Bassin d'Arcachon. It is 60 km. south west of Bordeaux in the Gironde region of Aquitaine.
How to get there: Drive towards the town of Arcachon and the Dune is signposted. A car park near the northern end provides easiest access via a path over the sand.
Accommodation: The resort of Arcachon has plenty of accommodation. There are also several campsites along the foot of the Dune, some of which have built steep ladders to start your climb up the sand.
What to take/
Other info:
Even if you have a wind-still day grains of sand can often get onto your equipment. Make sure you take a soft cloth to wipe your camera, but use a blower brush to remove grains from your lens without scratching.
