PHOTO LOCATION: Chiang Mai Temples, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Mysterious Chedi Luang

ABOUT THE LOCATION

Thailand’s “capital of the north” was once surrounded by thick stone walls to protect its inner treasures. Today only small sections of these fortifications may remain, but Chiang Mai still has a myriad of temples to photograph. The temple complex of Wat Chedi Luang includes a huge, square chedi which is mystically lit at night. Like many of the temples in Chiang Mai it has a monastic school in its grounds, and there’s always plenty of activity. The oldest temple in Chiang Mai is Wat Chiang Man, which has a chedi decorated by stone elephants, and at the end of Ratchadamnoen, Wat Phra Sing is another temple which receives many visitors who come to admire its splendid carvings and finely detailed, painted murals. Just outside the city walls are more unusual temples such as Wat Suan Dok, a great location for sunset photos.
TIPS FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER

What to photograph: As well as countless wats, with fabulous decorations, you can photograph city life, the walled remains and lively local markets.
When to photograph: Wat Phra Sing is best in the morning. Get there early to photograph the novice monks arriving for school.
Photography tips: A lot of the young monks love talking to foreigners. By spending some time with them you can come back with some great, joyful photos.
