PHOTO LOCATION: Vientiane Temples, Vientiane, Laos

Wat Si Saket

ABOUT THE LOCATION

Vientiane is quite small for a capital, but it's packed with treasures to photograph. The most stunning jewel in its crown is the temple of Pha That Luang, the most sacred temple in Laos, which is the focus for the annual full moon festival. The oldest temple in Vientiane is Wat Si Saket which is richly decorated, and contains literally thousands of Buddha images in all shapes and sizes. Another of Vientiane's major temples is Haw Pha Kaew which is set in gardens. The building now acts as a national museum, and contains many religious objects, but photographically the interest lies in the structure itself and the wonderful Buddha statues which line the veranda. Apart from the temples, Patuxai is another impressive structure in Vientiane which is well worth a few frames. Reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe, it's a huge four-sided arch which luckily has room on several sides to move back and do it justice.
TIPS FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER

What to photograph: Major wats including Pha That Luang, Wat Si Saket and Haw Pha Kaew (now a museum), Patuxai and the Talat Sao market.
When to photograph: Pha That Luang and Patuxai can be shot from various angles during the day. The historical wats have opening times, usually 8 till 4 with a break for lunch.
Photography tips: The stupa of Pha That Luang is gold and therefore highly reflective. Watch out that your camera's meter is not fooled by its brightness.
