PHOTO LOCATION: Hardangervidda Plateau, Hordaland, Norway

Mystical Evening Mood

ABOUT THE LOCATION

This immense mountain plateau is claimed to be the largest in Europe, and has a lot to offer the photographer who fancies a change from the fjordic scenery of Norway. The wide open tundra landscape is spread out over the three counties of Telemark, Buskerud and Hordaland, and is dotted with tranquil lakes and traditional huts, with a backdrop of impressive mountains. Small creeks wind their way down through the hills and wild flowers, while further off the beaten track you may easily encounter reindeer as the Hardangervidda is home to Norway’s largest herd. And when you’ve finished your landscape photography, and begin your descent from the plateau towards Eidfjord, you can stop and spend some more time at the Vøringfoss, one of Norway’s most famous waterfalls.
TIPS FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER

What to photograph: Hårteigen - an unusual shaped mountain, wild flowers and creeks, dramatic scenery, Hardangerjøkulen glacier, many lakes, and Vøringsfossen waterfall.
When to photograph: Although Summer is the most popular time to visit, it remains relatively peaceful on the plateau. At sunrise and sunset the lakes can have beautiful reflections.
Photography tips: Try taking a shot of an isolated hut with plenty of room around it in the frame to emphasize the sometimes desolate nature of the plateau.

  FACTS & INFO

The thundering Vøringfoss

Where it is: The Hardangervidda plateau is in the central part of southern Norway, roughly 120 km north-west of Oslo. Vøringsfossen is about 17 km from Eidfjord.
How to get there: Probably the most easy access by road is to use highway 7 from Geilo to Eidfjord. Then be prepared to do some walking.
Accommodation: There are a couple of hotels on highway 7 and you can pay to stay the night in a camper van on their car parks. Huts are dotted around the plateau.
What to take/
Other info:
Mosquitos can be really annoying in Summer, so take plenty of insect repellant with you, or even a net to cover your face.
