PHOTO LOCATION: Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, U.S.A.

The Castle

ABOUT THE LOCATION

This beautiful area is not as well-visited as its famous neighbours of Bryce Canyon and Arches National Park, however there is plenty to photograph here. It was set up to protect the colourful Waterpocket Fold, a 160 km. long wrinkle in the earth’s crust, which runs through the park. The park is full of pinnacles, buttes and canyons and amazing chocolate brown folded rocks. The 8-mile scenic drive from the visitor’s centre gives you a good impression of what the park has to offer with walks through this amazing landscape and into the deep canyons. One of the reasons that the park sees less visitors than some maybe due the fact that other parts of the park can only be reached by 4-wheel drive vehicles.
TIPS FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER

What to photograph: Rock formations such as Chimney Rock and The Castle plus views from Panorama Point. Cathedral Valley if you have a 4WD car.
When to photograph: There are good morning possibilities, but probably most of your shots will be taken at the end of the day.
Photography tips: Leading lines such as a road can make an interesting feature in your landscape composition. Use a low angle to make the lines more prominent.
