PHOTO LOCATION: Buddha Park, South of Vientiane, Laos

Misty Moods

ABOUT THE LOCATION

This is a small public park outside Vientiane. It is officially called Xieng Khuan, but many use the name Buddha Park as it is packed with an unusual array of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures, constructed in 1958 by a holyman called Luang Pu.

Due to its distance from the capital many tourists are unaware of its existence, and it therefore retains a tranquil air, with the few visitors being mostly monks and Lao families.

The fascinating mix of figures create a photographer’s paradise and provide an opportunity to capture many different religious forms in one compact location.
TIPS FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER

What to photograph: Religious statues in all shapes and forms. Some of the visiting monks may be willing to pose by one of the statues.
When to photograph: Best in the afternoon, but also many possibilities in the morning. The park is open from 8 till 4:30 in the afternoon.
Photography tips: Take your widest lens for the gigantic reclining Buddha and play with experimental angles. Try to show the scale by adding a natural element.
